If you love Spanish gastronomy, you must save a special room in your heart (and your stomach) for these Spanish desserts. But beware! you run the risk of becoming addicted! Don’t say I didn’t warn you …. These are the traditional Spanish desserts that you should include on your wish list.

1. Arroz con leche

The Spanish version of rice pudding is one of the most popular Spanish desserts and it can be found in almost every restaurant in Spain. It is believed that this dish has its origin in Moorish cuisine and it is one of the remaining traces of the past Muslim presence in Spain. We have been enjoying this delicious dessert for over a thousand years!

This simple Spanish dessert of just rice, milk, sugar and some spices, such as vanilla, cinnamon and lemon is a safe bet. Without a doubt, a very tempting dessert, which I can hardly ever resist!

2. Leche frita

This unique Spanish dessert can be confusing as it literally means fried milk. But… what? Fried milk? How exactly can you eat fried milk? This is what I thought the first time my mom made this dessert when I was little. Well, it’s easier than it sounds. It consists of flour cooked with milk and sugar until it thickens, which usually takes several hours to wait.

The dough is then cut into portions and fried in an egg and flour dough. It is usually served sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon powder.

It may not be a dessert for the impatient, but trust me, it’s worth the wait!

3. Rosquillas

This is a Spanish dessert that brings back fond memories. My grandmother made them and they were a real hit with her grandchildren. Although the recipe is not particularly difficult, I will never eat rosquillas like Grandma’s again! 

Rosquillas are very popular during Madrid’s San Isidro celebrations in May and you can find four types:

  • Las listas (the smart ones) – covered in a lemon sugar glaze
  • Las tontas (the dumb ones) – rosquillas without any coating
  • Las de Santa Clara (Santa Clara’s)– covered with a dry merengue coating
  • Las francesas (french ones) – covered in a sugar glaze with almonds

4. Flan

Flan is a very special Spanish dessert. Its consistency is like a mixture of pudding and gelatin, with a firm appearance but that melts in your mouth, covered with sugar syrup. Here in Spain, it’s so popular that it’s sold in all supermarkets. However, its peculiar consistency is not to everyone’s taste. It’s a dessert that you either love madly, or you really hate.

5. Crema catalana

This Spanish dessert, originally from Catalonia, is similar to creme brule, but flavoured with orange and/or lemon and a hint of cinnamon. 

You’ll love its creamy texture and sweet crunchy topping!

6. Churros

Churros are not actually a dessert, but a snack, but they are such a famous and popular pastry that they deserve a place on this list. Although the recipe is extraordinarily simple (it’s just a flour dough) they are never made at home and we usually eat them as street food or in cafes with hot chocolate.

There’s nothing that makes me feel better on a cold winter’s day than hot chocolate with churros!

7. Natillas

Natillas (Spanish custard) is one of the most popular traditional desserts in Spain. It consists of a soft cream made with milk and eggs and flavoured with vanilla and cinnamon, accompanied by a biscuit. Like flan, it’s so popular that it can be found in any supermarket in Spain, although its preparation is very easy to do at home.

8. Torrijas

This simple but tempting Spanish dessert is very popular, especially during Lent and Easter. It consists of slices of bread battered in milk, eggs, sugar and wine or honey, and fried with olive oil. This is a delicious way to reuse stale bread!
